Antique French faience or terre de fer stem vase or wall pocket with blue and white transfer decoration. In France these are usually termed 'bouquetieres' while the English term is Bough Pot.
This piece is quite thickly potted and glazed, it is difficult to date or ascribe a maker, although it has some impressed initials and numbers underneath.
These items were made in a similar style from the seventeenth century in the low countries, when tulips were a valuable and fashionable commodity, but I think it is likely that this is an early twentieth century version. When originally used, the bulb would have been placed in the centre larger aperture and the stems of the flowers around it. The top has one large semi circular aperture and then a number of small pierced holes for adding individual bloom stems. Later these were used simply for floral arrangements on the mantlepiece or sometimes in the summer to fill the unused fireplace.
The tinglaze is thickly applied to a biscuit base, the transfer print design of a windmill, canal, Dutch lady and fresian cows is in the centre surrounded by flowers, while the top has, sprigs of flowers and little butterflies or other winged insects all in blue. The rims are banded with floral and Greek key borders.
The form is waisted, with a band of raised decoration around the centre.
At the back the piece is undecorated.
This is a very stylish large piece of French faience. Size approx width 21cm, depth 13cm and height 10cm.
There are a few nibbles to the glaze and body, as is usual in faience pieces of some age. See photos for condition.

Deliveries to most other European destinations are generally to your doorstep unless it is much cheaper to use Pont Relais.
Outside of Europe we use La Poste International parcel service.

Obvious damage and faults will always be mentioned in our descriptions but minor age-related condition issues are not considered a detriment.
