Wonderful rustic creamy yellow glazed earthenware slip decorated antique tall flagon or jug probably from the Alsace region of Northern france.
This antique jug dates probably from the nineteenth or even eighteenth century. The slip decoration is arranged in swirls of white and large naively applied spots of deep blue colour each surrounded by small terracotta red dots, on the pale yellow glazed ground. The handle has a row of white dots. The body of the stoneware is made from a pale creamy white clay. The glaze and decoration has deteriorated somewhat with areas of wear and crazing, and nibbles to the rim, indicative of age.
Size is approx handle to spout 16cm, diameter 12cm, base diameter 8cm, height 20cm.
As condition is worn, it is best to keep this item for decorative purposes only.
The glaze has crazing, and some wear and losses to the inside, please study photos, as there are usually nibbles to the soft glazes on these old and well loved pieces. Faience readily shows its age due to the nature of the materials used, if an item is pristine it is probably a new reproduction. There are also some nibbles to the rim of the jug, reflecting its age and a lifetime of use.
We are able to post out parcels from Metropolitan France and shipping fees are shown. Please allow plenty of transit time, as European post is notoriously slow!
*The customer is responsible for any import duties incurred for an item. We will require a telephone number to add to the customs forms, to help prevent any delays or transit problems. If you refuse delivery of an item due to customs costs, please be aware that your parcel's postage costs will be forfeit, although we are happy to refund the item purchase price upon return.
**Please also note that most deliveries within France and some other European Union countries are usually made to a Pont Relais collection point, there are usually a number of these located in shops and supermarkets in each town, and you will be given the opportunity to specify which one you prefer if this service is available for your location. Otherwise I will select the shop with the longest opening hours within your area. Deliveries to most other European destinations are generally to your doorstep unless it is much cheaper to use Pont Relais.
***Currently deliveries to the UK may be impacted by Brexit paperwork and procedural delays. This situation is becoming easier as time goes by. The sales tax is being included in any sales so there should be nothing extra due to pay when your parcel arrives, subject to customs clearance.
Our items are carefully selected antique and vintage pieces from France and they show the character and charm of years of use. We do not sell new or reproduction items so you can expect to find signs of the age and life that the piece has led. We believe this history adds to the story of an item. Obvious damage and faults will always be mentioned in our descriptions but minor age-related condition issues are not considered a detriment.
