Antique French terre de fer ironstone stamp decorated St Uze lidded soupier tureen casserole pot

A highly collectible St Uze stamp decorated soupier with lid.

The small ceramic manufacturers of St Uze and other villages in the Drome area of France produced a particular type of stoneware called fire porcelain, which was based on a white kaolin body similar to porcelain, fired at a high temperature to give it vitreous qualities meaning it was especially impervious to liquids and could be used both in the home or domestic environment and in industrial applications. The body and glaze give a slightly glassy look and feel to the objects produced.
The decorated wares known as 'St Uze blues' were produced from the 1870s and the blue decoration was applied by rubber stamp under a translucent glaze.

This small soupier or lidded tureen has slight crazing and cracking to the glaze, with a little discolouration, a condition very common in pieces from the early production of this ware. It is a charming characteristic of the piece and is not considered a detriment. There is an old chip on the rim of the body at the side. See photo.
The stylised 'art nouveau' design forget me not swag and sprig pattern is cobalt blue and green on a creamy white ground. The use of green on these wares is quite rare and makes this item more collectible.
The base is stamped with the mark of the St Uze factory.

***Currently deliveries to the UK may be impacted by Brexit paperwork and procedural delays, This situation is becoming easier as time goes by. The sales tax is being included in any sales so there should be nothing extra due to pay when your parcel arrives, subject to customs clearance.
