Old French rustic ribbed carved cow design wooden butter mould pat press

A delightfully rustic old French hand-carved vintage dairy butter mould with ribbed sides and cow design scribed into base.

Size approx Length 34.5cm, width 13cm, height 5cm.
This item is made from solid pieces of timber, it is in good used condition. The main body of the mould has a shaped handle at one end. The base is attached with small rivets and it is deeply carved with the cow design which is an oft-used motif in Normandy, from where this mould originates.
This item would most likely have been made by the farmhands in the atelier on the farm where it was to be used in the dairy. They used local timbers cut from the fields and primitive hand lathes and tools to produce everything the farm needed, from the smallest items such as dairy spoons right up to gates, fences, doors and even barn buildings. This butter mould probably dates from the latter half of the 20th century. It shows some modern fixing methods such as the curly wire bracket attaching the two halves of the oval together.
