Very large antique French woven wooden champignons or harvest basket

A charming and unusually large useful antique panier harvest basket with woven bark strip stave wooden body and simple bentwood branch handle.
Traditionally these baskets were used on the farm to harvest the fruit crops and for other tasks around the farmyard and farmhouse kitchen garden.
This basket is in relatively good condition, perfectly useable for gathering cut flowers, or collection, display and storage of eggs, fruits, mushrooms, nuts and other kitchen goodies, shopping at the market, or even bathroom soaps & toiletries, office sundries, threads and yarns, crafting supplies... the only limit on its use is your imagination.
The woven body is richly patinated with years of use, sometimes the baskets were oiled or tarred to make them waterproof, this one has a dark colour to the inside indicating some past oiling of the staves. There are signs of past use and wear with a little splitting and a sprinkling of old worm holes scattered on the frame and staves, common in most antique French wooden items. This does not impact the stability and sturdiness of the basket. See photos for condition.
The bentwood twig handle retains its bark and shows the wear of many hands carrying it. The handle is very sturdy and is fixed to the sides of the basket firmly with woven staves in diamond pattern, a traditional design. The handle forms an oval loop upon which the structure of the basket is built. A magnificent example of this old craft, now sadly in decline.

Size approx 31cm high, length 56cm, width 39cm
