Wonderful bucolic figures in Eighteenth Century rococo style costume adorn this pair of antique French bronze d'or or ormolu cast candlesticks.
The heavy cast pieces have a gilt metal finish, and sit on a round base, impressed with decorative detail and cast with pierced leaves and scrolls forming the feet.
One figure is male and the other is female holding up her skirts in one hand, they both hold a scythe. Each of the figures is surrounded by wheat sheaves. Similar designs are found in English porcelain figures from the late Eighteenth Century.
This is a matched pair, they were most likely made at slightly different times, there are very slight differences for example in the decoration on the circular base, and in the patination. They would therefore be an excellent candidate for painting.
The figures are cast separately from the column, and added so that the bodies are freestanding.
They probably date from the Nineteenth Century, but might even be from the century before.
Size of each piece approx height 27.5cm, width across base 9cm. The collar diameter is approx 6.5cm and the candle cup 3cm, it holds a standard dinner candle.
We are able to post out parcels from Metropolitan France and shipping fees are shown, the customer is responsible for any import duties incurred for an item. Please allow plenty of transit time, as European post is notoriously slow! For orders from outside the EU please be sure to add your PHONE NUMBER or message me with it, as I cannot ship without this. Please also note that deliveries within France are made to a Pont Relais collection point, there are usually a number of these located in shops and supermarkets in each town, and you will be given the opportunity to specify which one you prefer. Deliveries to other European destinations are generally to your doorstep.
Our items are carefully selected antique and vintage pieces from France and they show the character and charm of years of use. We do not sell new or reproduction items so you can expect to find signs of the age and life that the piece has led. We believe this history adds to the story of an item. Obvious damage and faults will always be mentioned in our descriptions but minor age-related condition issues are not considered a detriment.
